Character Counts: In Life and with a Home Business

Character Counts: In Life and in a Home Business

The dictionary defines character as the mental and moral qualities of an individual.

I would define character as the value that encompasses many of your other values such as trustworthiness, honesty, respect, and reliability.  It has been said that character is what you do when no one is looking.

To me character is one of the most important things you possess in life.  Your character defines who you are and how you are viewed by the rest of the world.

It is sometimes hard to put into words exactly what good character is but I think you can understand better by looking at a couple of examples.

  • Let’s say you were at the store and your purchase total came out to $7.55.  You give the clerk a $10 bill.  They in turn give you back $12.45 thinking you gave them a $20.  Do you stay quiet and quickly head out of the store or do you hand the clerk back $10 and let them know they made a mistake?
  • You are visiting a friend’s house and you break one of their favorite possessions.  You are alone when this happens and you have the chance to put this item back in a corner where no one will notice.  (Let’s even say you are guaranteed that your friend will never know it was you.)  Would you push the item back on a shelf and walk away like nothing happened or would you confess your error to your friend?

Most of us have found ourselves in positions similar to this at some point in our lives.  What did you do?

Your character is defined by the choices you make.  Choices become habit.  Your reputation and how you are treated by others all depend on those habits and decisions that you make your own.

As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built.”

It is the same in life as it is in business.

Home business opportunities are some of the worst when it comes to displaying good character.

There is a whole group of people and even companies set up just to get you and your money.  They stretch the truth and make promises that they never even attempt to deliver.  Their bad character has given home business and especially MLM a black eye.

Remember how your Mom used to warn you about hanging around with those “bad kids”.  She said you are going to be associated with them and their values.  The same has happened with MLM.

Too many people are putting themselves first and making promises they know they can’t fill.

Character in business means being honest with yourself and those you deal with.  Everyone makes mistakes, but almost everyone is willing to forgive those mistakes if you are honest and admit when you have made one.

Just think about the good ol’ golden rule.  Treat others as you would like to be treated.  Think back to when you were first looking to start a business.  What did you want to find?  Did you believe everything you read?  Did you wish you could?  Did you deal with anybody that you felt didn’t have the highest character?  Did you join them?  Do you want to be known as someone like that?

I think it’s is time to take home businesses – especially online and MLM businesses – to a higher level.  Let’s make good character a habit. Treat people with honesty and respect even when we can stay anonymous on the other side of the computer screen…

Good Character does not mean perfection – it means being the best person you can be, admitting when you have made a mistake and then doing what you can to rectify and learn from that mistake.

Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open.

Character Counts!

I have found that in my research on the computer that if a person leads with anything at all about money then the opportunity is in all probability more of a scam than not. The character issue shows up with the way a person writes just like it would with how they talk. Thank you for bringing up this point. I hope more MLM business people will follow what you have to say. It was refreshing to hear…

    • I would have to agree to a point. When money is mentioned in a way such as “make thousands each week just by signing up and sitting back” the offer is definitely a scam in my book. The best way I have found to figure out if the offer is legitimate and the person offering it has the character I mention in the post is to develop a relationship. Get to know who they are and what they stand for. Take a look at what they offer online and don’t be afraid to make contact by email or even phone. I know I have created an entire training site just to help introduce people to me and what I have to offer. It’s a way to get to know more about me and the opportunity I have before you ever even have to think about moving forward. There is a form over on the right hand side if you want to get the free login info…

  2. Allison O'Brien says:

I like everything that you have to say, but how do you find out if an opportunity is legitimate? How can you tell from a computer screen who has good character and who doesn’t?

    • Hi Allison, thanks for the question. It can be tough to tell what all you are getting into just by what the computer screen says. I think you really need to make more of a connection with a person before you can really tell. Sign up for their newsletter and take a look at their website, youtubes and articles if they have any. Get to know who they are by what they put online and then if you are still impressed don’t be afraid to contact them.

(If you don’t want your personal email filled with newsletter info and free reports, make yourself a gmail or yahoo email just for this purpose)

Good Luck. (also, my reply to Angela’s comment above might also help. You might take a look…)

  3. Character Counts! Great post. It is so important. Character is the basis of everything else. Thanks!

  4. Hi great read enjoyed my visit – will be sharing this page with my grand children –

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I liked the way this flowed

  5. It is so hard for some to comprehend on how a bad post, picture, or quote can haunt them for the rest of their days online. Thanks for sharing with us.

  6. I agree totally with your article, I have found that character means a great deal in business today, if you tell somebody you are going to do something you should do it because if you don’t follow through then you have the potential of losing employees and customers. Then by word of mouth you lose more customers so it is always better to be of good character in your personal life as well as business. You are right on, thanks.

  7. Adapt Or Change But Never Compromise… Uncertainty about the future is ramping up worldwide. Therefore, it becomes even more important to stay focused and on-track personally. Over the next two years, people will look at what used to be “normal and it will seem like that happened in some other lifetime. And even if you are able to maintain a steady course, that doesn’t mean those around you will be able to. The steadier you are, the more some of those around you will be inclined to lean on you. So, your discipline to maintain a steady course may become the target for those around you. You will need to create boundaries so certain types of people are not allowed to abuse your most powerful asset – your steadfastness. You are the only real asset you own and control.

  8. If we are truly realistic about it, I would say that the answers / outcomes to the scenarios you pose in the article will depend on the amount of money each person stands to walk away with. As they say, every man has his price. While the prospect of living with integrity is one most will profess to living by, I am simply being realistic about how the world is. There are few persons who will return a brief case / stash of one million dollars, but for every idealistic person, there are myriads of avaricious people who will take full advantage.

  9. Are you quick to find fault with others? Do you judge others based on their looks, beliefs or lifestyle? Do you love to gossip about others or do you live a life of lies to make others think more of you? How’s this working for you? Are you better off today than 5 years ago?…10 years ago?…25 years ago? Or, are you pretty much the same person reliving out the prejudices, biases, and beliefs you learned as a child from your family and the people you grew up around? You turn out just like them – is this how we become our parents? Can we change?
Predictions from Higher Intelligence: – “People become their parents because they never chose to stop blaming them. If your parents were alcoholics, does that mean you have to be one? No more so than if your parents were Nobel Prize winners. If your parents abused you, does that mean you abuse your children or spouse? A behavior that your parents had, like alcoholism, could be the reason you never touch the stuff or the reason you turned out to be a drunk. You can cite the same source for how you turned out either way. So, it must be a conscious choice. You create in your life what you intend to create and not what someone else created for you. You always have a choice.

Commentary from the Mediums: It should be your goal to live life authentically. Never live a carbon-copy life. You are not your parents, your friends, or anyone else. You must break the bonds that your parents or others have on you. Discover ways to live that compliment your talents, abilities, and uniqueness while never compromising your values or integrity. Many people have learned how to do things well but failed to learn how to live well and authentic.

  10. Character is what you build any relationship on in business and personal life. If you don’t have good character your customers will recognize this right off the bat and your business is going to go under quickly. Build your customer base on trust , commitment and character and you can’t go wrong.

  11. This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free of charge. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a high quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes close to routine. Did you acquired plenty of links and I see lots of trackbacks?

  12. Mr. Tomberlin is true when he says how many multi level marketers have lost their way or been influenced by some bad apples within the MLM ranks into hard selling at all costs. Just as with any business, you may be able to rake in some quick cash by taking short cuts, but in the long run, you will fail. People will talk and you will develop a reputation, whether good or bad. But if it’s bad, you soon won’t have any customers left. The way to long term success is integrity and with that, I have seen some families involved in MLM establish a loyal customer base and a secure long lasting income.

  13. Great Post Quick read and informative.

  14. Awesome blog. I’ve read just about every post of yours and this one is probably my favorite.

  15. It is excellent idea. I support you.
